How to Create the Most Relaxing Bedroom
If you’ve been reading my blog or following me on social media for any length of time, you may be aware that I am a 5AM workout gal. Before you think “OMG, WTF NO WAY” or “Girl, more power to ya – I’m not a morning person!”, I’d like to point out that — I’m not a morning person, never have been, never will be. I workout in the morning only because that’s the best time in my schedule where I can fit it! Ha!
I’ve given tips before on how to get yourself up early in the morning so that you CAN be a morning workout person, but what if you aren’t getting restful sleep??
Our bedrooms are supposed to be a place of relaxation, right?? Your bedroom should be a place where you can go at the end of the day to recharge and recover from the day’s stresses. If you are having trouble unwinding when you head to sleep, then you may be suffering from your surroundings. Here’s how to create the most relaxing bedroom to get the most rest and relaxation.
The Bed
There’s a saying that goes something like “Don’t skimp on the things that separate you from the Earth. You should have the best shoes, tires, and sheets.”. I totally agree with this saying. Splurge on the best sheets you can afford. If your bed is lumpy or otherwise uncomfortable, replace it! Your body and mind will thank you for a new bed and new sheets!
The Color
Our brains all react to different colors. Red stimulates blood flow and appetite, blue is calming and can make you feel relaxed. When it comes to painting your room and choosing the decor, try and go for a blue shade or theme. You will be surprised how one simple change can affect the whole room and make you more relaxed. Give it a try!
The Screens
I know this is tough for a lot of us, but, remove the TV from your room, as well as other screens (phones, tablets, computers). I enjoy lounging around in bed and binge watching my favorite shows or playing Diner Dash on my iPhone just as much as the next person, but it’s not good for our relaxing environment. The light from our screens stimulates our brains into thinking that it’s time to be awake. This can mess up your circadian rhythm (the cycle that tells your body when it is time for sleep). Not to mention, your bed should only be used for relaxing things like reading, sleeping, or even meditation. This way, your body knows that when you are in bed, then it is time for sleep!
The Temperature
We humans like to sleep in cooler environments. When we are falling asleep, our bodies will actually lower in temperature as our breathing slows and heart rate stabilizes. Get a head-start on this process by lowering the temperature in your bedroom just a few degrees. If it doesn’t work the first night, try a couple more degrees the next night, and so on, until you find the sweet spot.
Now that you know how to create the most relaxing bedroom environment, you should have no troubles getting to sleep. If you happen to be reading this while lying in bed, trying to sleep, put the phone/tablet/laptop away and get some sleep! Otherwise, comment below and let me know your tips on turning your bedroom into a relaxing sanctuary!
Just thinking about all these helpful tips to create a relaxing bedroom made me sleepy and want to go take a nap. In other words, your post is a success, Natalie! Don’t think I can get my husband to remove the TV, but will work to have it turned off earlier at night. Baby steps.
Ha! My hubby is the same way; I have at least gotten him down to using his iPhone over on his side of the bed, and he will face away from me so that his body shields me from the light 🙂
Little by little… I’m getting him there!
So glad you enjoyed the article!
Great tips for a relaxing night. I wish I can take my TV out, but my husband will probably fight that one ;). I agree with ” shoes, tires and sheets” , totally makes a sense.
🙂 I have gotten my hubby to at least use his iphone screen to watch stuff over on his side of the bed haha! Small victories, eh? Happy you enjoyed the article!
Great post and out of your norm… I like it. But I have to say, the TV is my relaxation time.. sorry! lol
Glad you like the post! 🙂 I understand about the TV though – different strokes, girl!
As I sit here (on my laptop LOL) I realize that my wall colours are yellow!!! Hmm, wonder if that is stimulating colour – probably. Our room is due for an uplift soon so I will keep your suggestions in mind – maybe blue is in my future!
Thanks!
Mine are (pale) yellow too, but I can’t see the walls at night with the lights out, and the cheerful color helps me get going in the morning.
I believe the author is right though, about bright colors in the bedroom. The visual stimulation, even during the short time while preparing for bed, can affect ones ability to fall asleep quickly.
Ooooh a little DIY on the horizon, eh? Yeah, I’d love to hear what color(s) you go with!
I’m wondering why my eyes are closing & I have a few more hours work to get done. All great tips.
Hahaha! Maybe I relaxed ya a little too much? 🙂 Glad you liked the article, Roz!
Great tips. I feel sleepy already. I’m drawn to reds and other earth tones. Maybe I will just add some blue to tone down the red. 🙂
I like earth tones and reds, too. I am glad now, though, that the home we bought was already painted a pale blue in the master BR! Glad you liked the article 🙂
I have sent this article to my wonderful husband (about three times on delay 🙂 ) He is a huge fan of TV in the bed and I think it is killing my sleep. Nice to have girl power support.
😉 We ladies have to stick together, don’t we? I hope he’ll heed the tips; I’m crossing my fingers for ya!
We recently re-decorated our Master bedroom. The change of color and higher quality of bedding has made a HUGE difference.
Oh I can imagine! Our quality of sheets, decor, everything in our bedroom has changed drastically just in the last 6 years or so when we first moved in together — and our sleep quality has improved just as drastically 🙂
Absolutely! When we moved it took me months to decide what I wanted my bedroom to be. Now I love being in my bedroom, it was important that it was relaxing.
Isn’t it wonderful how a calming bedroom can help you totally release the day?? Glad you love your bedroom!!
What a great post! Super ideas on how to create a relaxing bedroom. The screen tip is key — the blue light emitted by your screens affect your body’s melatonin production, which leads to poor quality sleep.
Thanks for your comment, Jackie!
It was sort of a revelation, but also a “well duh, now I get it!” moment when I stopped having screens in my room. My sleep quality has drastically improved!
“…your bed should only be used for relaxing things like reading, sleeping, or even meditation”
Uh, not so. There’s another, more active, pastime that is considered acceptable for this location.
Bahahahaha!! Okay, so I really REALLY battled with myself on how to word/not word that part! I couldn’t figure out how to include *certain things* without it being worded badly, or coming off creepy (I’m probably projecting lol) so I just left that part out – with the assumption that most people would naturally include it haha!
