Keys to a Successful Home Business
Once you have your home business up and running, you want it to be successful…Everyone does! That old statistic that small businesses fail within the first year needs to be thrown out the window. With the right keys to a successful home business, you can be rockin’ & rollin’ for years to come. Who knows, you may even work from home for the rest of your life or turn your home business into an empire!
Here are the main things that you should focus on to be successful:
Support System
First and foremost, you need a solid support system. There must be people in your life that will remind you that the sky isn’t falling when you have a bad day of business. Surround yourself with people who support you and your dreams and don’t listen to the people who say you can’t do it. In my home business, I’m part of a wonderful team of fellow GirlBosses, and we learn and grow together; this means we also lean on each other when times are hard and when we need a pep talk to block out the “haters”.
If you do have to listen to them let them be your motivators and prove them wrong!
Have a Marketable Product
Sure you can try and sell your homemade food from home or on an eCommerce website. But, as harsh as this sounds, you should really take a step back and ask yourself, “If I were in the store and saw this product, would I buy it?” If the answer is no, that doesn’t mean to give up. It means you just have to work on your approach a little bit to refine it. Once you have a marketable product, you’re in business.
Many home entrepreneurs choose to partner with a known product line and act as distributors or marketers for those proven products; this is a tried & true method of home business ownership that’s worked for decades – even I do that, as a coach for my favorite wellness & nutrition programs! This kind of business model is called “direct sales” or “network marketing” and there’s plenty of free training out there, not to mention unlimited client prospects!
Network
This is one of the most important things you can do to be successful in any start-up business. Networking with other small businesses is a fantastic idea to get your name and your brand out there. Some options would be sharing each other’s content on your business’ social media accounts. Or you can even offer discounts to employees of a business that is a little bigger than yours in exchange for some advertisement from them. Working with other small businesses will jump start your business and help you grow into something beyond your wildest imagination.
If you have a dream to start your own business and you want to be successful, use these keys for a successful home business. Keep moving until you’re successful and then push even harder until you are where you want your business to be. It doesn’t stop once you’ve “made it” keep pushing and turn your brand into an empire!

A support system is definitely #1, I’d say! I think a good system will hold you accountable and not let you give up on those days that it’s rough!
A support system is so important. You don’t realise you’re missing it until you really need someone to lean on during those bad times.
Hi Natalie,
I think what you’ve listed here are definitely the three foundational keys for a successful home business. I feel like you really can’t have one without the other. I’m pinning this post!!
I second having a support system! Totally important for those days that are hard! Also good to celebrate with someone who really cares!
Great article! Agree with the points, and find a keen desire to work hard is also essential.
Having a support system is ultimate to any successful home business. Even if your products are good, a support system will always help to boost your moral.
Transitioning from Corporate America to my own business this year has been an eye opener indeed! I mistakenly thought that having an online business might mean less networking, but that was not the case. Having a support system has been more valuable than I ever imagined. Love the advice you give!
Great article Natalie. I’ve had a difficult time lately finding support people who are actually able to do what they say. I’d love to hear (maybe another blog) how you screen people.
Love how you make work look fun!
Great article, Natalie. I think training and support are super important for any home business. Accountability is key, too. I think many direct sales companies don’t adequately train their folks and this creates challenges with the industry. Having been part of many DS companies over the years, some are definitely better than others. Great tips you’ve provided for all home based businesses.
having a strong support system is so important to succeeding. I love those around me. (including many in these blog groups) that support me constantly
Thanks for the reminder of how important this is
Great article Natalie! You have to able to work independently and get yourself our of bed, even on a bad day. No work, no pay, is ever more true when you’re working and trying to build your own business from home. Of course, I agree like everyone else that has commented, a good support system is super important, even if it’s just one person. I have my husband and that’s all I need.
I’ve worked from home for several years now and just signed up with Avon recently. I am very impressed with the training program they have in place.
Best of luck to you and your visitors.
