Anyone who has known me for any length of time, definitely knows I’m not punctual, I don’t like getting up early, and I am just NOT a MORNING PERSON.
So, it’s probably pretty surprising – shocking, even – for my friends to find out these days that I get up at 4:45AM at least 5 days a week, and power through my workout before work.
Why do I do this???
Because working out is a NON-NEGOTIABLE for me. I absolutely have to workout in order to stay healthy, and to maintain the new lifestyle I’ve grown to love. Those 50 lbs aren’t allowed back! In fact, I’m sending some more of their friends to go find them 😉
I tried working out in the evenings, but I was just so inconsistent with it; I’ve found that I can come up with a lot more excuses after a long day at work, and then running errands, eating dinner, etc… a lot of ways to justify why I “can’t” workout.. and so I got tired of making excuses and decided I would just DO it.
The great thing about working out early in the morning is, once you’ve done it, your day is pretty much already going to kick ass.
After I’ve put in that first burst of effort, there’s no way I’m gonna ruin it with some greasy fries or sugary sweets at the office.
Basically, working out in the morning is the physical equivalent to having Shakeology for breakfast: they both start your day off RIGHT.
I feel more energetic, even bouncy, all day, and since most of the workouts I do lately are HIIT-based, my calorie burn keeps on going for most of the day!
You might ask me, “Natalie, you say you’re not an early morning person – and here we see you typing at 11PM – HOW are you getting up at 4:45AM tomorrow and working out?”
Well, first off – I try not to stay up late every night :-p
Secondly, I PLAN. All my workout clothes are ready, the iPad is charged, and the water bottle is full.
I usually set an alarm that goes off about an hour before my desired 9PM bedtime; this alarm lets me know it’s time to simmer down and get into my PJ’s, get tomorrow’s stuff prepped so I’ll be ready to rock & roll when that alarm goes off.
Third – When that alarm goes off, the first thought is HELL NAWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!! But I promise myself, and I guarantee you it’s an actual conversation in my brain that I’m having, “We will just go to the bathroom, brush teeth, wash face, change into the workout clothes, and try for 5 minutes. If we can’t do it after 5 minutes, we’ll come back to bed. No problem!!” (yes I refer to myself as “we” in my mind. No judging, k?)
It’s a GAME. In about a year’s time of doing this 5-minute-promise, I have gotten to the 5 minute mark and said to myself, “NOPE, goin back to bed!” only TWICE.
Once you drag yourself outta bed and make the effort it requires to get ready and start working out, there’s really no turning back! If I were to go back to bed at say 5:05AM, I would just barely be falling back asleep by the time my alarm would go off for me to get up and just get ready – so hello, let’s make the most of that time 🙂
